The Child1 Who2 Survived3

Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, who live at number four, Privet Drive, prided themselves on saying that they were perfectly normal

وَهُمَا فِعْلًا كَذَلِكَ.

and they truly were.

لَمْ يَكُنْ أَحَدٌ لِيَتَصَوَّرَ أَنْ تَتَوَرَّطَ هَذِهِ الْأُسْرَةُ

No one would have imagined that this family could become involved

فِي أَيِّ أُمُورٍ غَرِيبَةٍ أَوْ غَامِضَةٍ

in anything strange or mysterious

لِأَنَّهُمَا بِبَسَاطَةٍ لَا يُوَافِقَانِ عَلَى شَيْءٍ مِنْ هَذَا الْهَرَاءِ.“because they simply did not approve of any such nonsense.”3يَعْمَلُ السَّيِّدُ دُرْسْلِي مُدِيرًا لِشَرِكَةِ“Mr. Dursley worked as the director of a company”جُرُونِنْغْزْ لِصِنَاعَةِ الْمَثَاقِبِ،“called Grunnings, which made drills,”وَهُوَ رَجُلٌ ضَخْمُ الْبَدَنِ،“and he was a big, burly man,”لَا تَكَادُ رَقَبَتُهُ تَظْهَرُ مِنْ بَيْنِ كَتِفَيْهِ،“with hardly any neck visible between his shoulders,”مَعَ أَنَّ لَهُ شَارِبًا كَبِيرًا جِدًّا.“though he did have a very large mustache.”4أَمَّا زَوْجَتُهُ فَهِيَ نَحِيفَةٌ شَقْرَاءُ،“As for his wife, she was thin and blonde,”وَرَقَبَتُهَا أَطْوَلُ مِرَّتَيْنِ مِنْ أَيِّ رَقَبَةٍ عَادِيَّةٍ،“with a neck twice as long as any normal neck,”تَسْتَفِيدُ مِنْهَا فِي التَّجَسُّسِ عَلَى الْجِيرَانِ؛“which she put to good use spying on the neighbors;”5حَيْثُ تَقْضِي مُعْظَمَ وَقْتِهَا“for she spent most of her time”فِي مَدِّ رَقَبَتِهَا فَوْقَ سِيَاجِ الْحَدِيقَةِ.“stretching her neck over the garden fence.”
